Why is virus protection important?
Computer viruses spread through the Internet or over email. New viruses are discovered all the time. The more
harmful ones can destroy your data, while others simply reduce your computer's performance. Antivirus software prevents
your computer from becoming infected with viruses and other threats.
Anti-Virus Software
Installing and maintaining anti-virus software is the key to staying protected against viruses. Since new viruses are discovered all the time, it is important to update your anti-virus software's definitions. These updates are released periodically to help keep your anti-virus scanner effective against the latest virus threats. Here is some recommended free software you can use on your computer.
AVG Free Edition
Go to http://free.grisoft.com.
On the left hand side of the page, click Get AVG Free.
Scroll to the bottom and click the filename under AVG Free Edition installation files. This will open a File Download box.
Click Run or Open depending on your version of Internet Explorer.
When the installer starts, click Next through all of the defaults, accepting the License Agreement after reading it.
Choose Standard Installation.
When AVG runs for the first time, it will open a Congratulations box. Click Next, then click Check for Updates. Check the "Do not ask" box and click Internet. Click Update if AVG finds an update.
Click Next twice, then click Scan Computer!
When the scan finishes, AVG will either automatically clean the files, or prompt you to take action. If prompted, first try clean, if that doesn't work, click Move to Virus Vault. If the virus cannot be removed, take your computer to a repair shop.
Trend Micro HouseCall
Go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com.
Under the heading that says Scan Your PC, click the link that says, "Scan Now".
Choose your country from the list and submit. Follow the instructions onscreen to scan your computer.
